Review - Reg Meuross
31/05/19

What a celebration we had at the Everyman Folk Club last night of this living tradition we so love! Our Guest, Reg Meuross, delighted us all with his exquisitely crafted songs. Mainly combining his sublime vocals with masterful playing of his gorgeous 1944 Martin guitar, we were also treated to his harmonica and his Appalachian dulcimer. Each of Reg’s enthralling and lyrical songs was introduced with humour and humility, and his warmth and gentleness were evident throughout an expressive and flawless performance. Beautiful songs of love, loss, injustice, and history – all lovingly sung.

Our marvellous floor performers for the evening were Steve Danby, Megan Wisdom, Charlie Haylock, John Wright, Holly Johnston and Terence Blacker, including self-penned songs from Steve, Megan, Holly and Terence. Well done all, and thank you for your contributions.

A special mention of Holly. Having listened to Reg’s ‘Tony Benn’s Tribute to Emily Davison’ in the first half, she sang her new song of women’s Suffrage. On the night before the 1911 census – while Emily hid in a broom cupboard in the Houses of Parliament – women hid at 13 Museum Street in Ipswich (less than 20-miles away), writing on their forms the next day: ‘No persons here, only women’ and ‘I don’t count so I won’t be counted’.

Thanks so much to the terrific Everyman audience for being part of this superb evening. It was tremendous to have a full room (in spite of the road closure that caught us all by surprise!). As always, it was a joy to hear the whole room united in song and, as Reg said, you are indeed “masters of the choral singers”.

We hope everybody has a lovely Summer, and look forward to seeing you on Friday 27 September 2019, when lovely Rosie Hood returns to the Everyman with Lucy Huzzard making her first visit.
